On July 19, 2025, the Wonder Sea boat capsized in Ha Long Bay at 2 PM with 53 people aboard during a storm. Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is facing Storm Wipha, expected to hit early next week. So far, 12 people have been rescued, three bodies recovered, and a 14-year-old boy survived for four hours in an air pocket. A government statement promised to investigate the incident, while search teams continue to look for at least eight missing individuals, utilizing 27 boats and two rescue craft.

On July 20, 2025, the Health Ministry reported that over 70 Palestinians died while seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza. This tragedy occurred amid new Israeli military evacuation warnings that hindered access between key areas. Medical staff shared images of malnourished children and a severe shortage of medication. Shifa Hospital also reported 79 malnutrition-related deaths in the past month. Witnesses claimed Israeli forces fired on crowds near the Zikim crossing, resulting in numerous fatalities and over 120 injuries. This underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 58,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023 and ongoing concerns over aid access.

On July 20, 2025, in Tokyo, the ruling coalition is expected to lose its majority, leading to potential political instability, according to Reuters. Rising prices and stagnant incomes prompted voters to shift toward opposition parties, which promised tax cuts and increased welfare spending. NHK exit polls project the ruling coalition to secure 32-51 out of 125 contested seats, while opposition parties, including Sanseito, may gain 10-22 seats. The yen rose by about 0.5%, and tighter margins could hinder Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's policy agenda and US trade negotiations. Ishiba will consider his next moves before a press conference as the coalition faces a projected loss of majority in the upper house, with an August 1 deadline for a US trade deal to avoid 25% tariffs.

As of July 20, 2025, the Gaza war has resulted in over 61,200 reported deaths, including 59,220 Palestinians and 1,983 Israelis, along with casualties among journalists, academics, and humanitarian workers. Scholars estimate that around 80% of the Palestinians killed are civilians, with a significant portion being women and children. The Gaza Health Ministry has identified 34,344 individual Palestinian casualties but does not include deaths from preventable diseases and malnutrition. In January 2025, a study published in The Lancet reported that fatalities from the conflict between October 2023 and June 30, 2024, totaled around 64,260 due to traumatic injuries, with predictions suggesting this number could surpass 70,000. It concluded that trauma-related deaths had been significantly underestimated and emphasized the broader impacts of the conflict on health services and living conditions.
